Asphalt roofing shingles and styles: As the name implies they are made of asphalt, the same material you drive on to work or to get back home. Importantly, asphalt roofing shingles are derived from oil and oil products, so just like vinyl siding asphalt roofing shingles cost will fluctuate with overall roofing demand, as well as the price of oil and refining costs. The technology that they replaced was called 3-tab asphalt roofing shingles. These were made of the same or similar material, but in a 3 tab or flatter design. Really nothing wrong with them other than the fact that they were thinner and usually carried a 15-20 year warranty. Most of the asphalt roofing shingles we replace are of these style. Keep posted to this space, as a new product is on the horizon. Solar asphalt roofing shingles have debuted, with a photovoltaic panel layered on top of an asphalt roofing shingle substrate! The energy efficiency is about 10% which means that is the percentage of available energy converted, and is close to what typical large panels can afford.
Lastly, there are multiple other and older types of asphalt roofing shingles that can be special ordered or quoted. They include but are not limited to: Diamond asphalt roofing shingles, Hexagonal asphalt roofing shingles, half round asphalt roofing shingles or single tab asphalt roofing shingles ( which are long single tabs ). If you have any of these on your house, your roof is likely over 30 years old and you should request a free estimate or evaluation.
The more expensive technologies that asphalt roofing shingles replace are: wood roofing shingles, metal roofing systems, slate or stone roofing shingles and more. Some homeowners due to personal preference or house style have a strong predilection towards one of these... but barring that, a professional asphalt roofing shingle installation will be kinder on your budget now and for decades into the future.
